LCPA Honors Members for Outstanding Service

The Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants (LCPA) recently honored six LCPA members – Lawrence Berdon, Lonnie Stockwell, Robert Perez, Stephen Romig, Kenneth Champagne, and Laura DeLaune Wiley – for their outstanding contributions to the CPA profession and the community.

Lawrence Berdon Sr., CPA, was honored with LCPA’s Life Membership Award to recognize his life-long record of achievement to benefit the future of CPAs throughout Louisiana. Berdon was a Director in the Accounting and Assurance Services Group at Postlethwaite & Netterville. He joined the firm in 1966 and retired in 2010. In addition to serving as the firm’s senior audit and quality control partner, Lawrence was on the initial peer review committee of the Private Companies Practice Section of the American Institute of CPAs' Division for CPA Firms.

Lonnie Stockwell, CPA, also was honored with LCPA’s Life Membership Award. For over 20 years, Stockwell has been very active in the LCPA and American Institute of CPAs. He served as LCPA president in 2000-2001 and on numerous committees throughout his career. He was the first CPA from Louisiana to receive American Institute of CPAs' National Public Service Award. He currently serves as a trustee for the AICPA Benevolent Fund. Stockwell recently retired as the Vice President of Board & Staff Development for Lighthouse Louisiana in New Orleans. Previously, he worked as managing director of the New Orleans office of Postlethwaite & Netterville, and later as an Executive Director/Private Banker in J.P. Morgan’s Private Bank in Baton Rouge.

Kenneth Champagne, CPA, received LCPA’s Outstanding CPA in Business & Industry Award which recognizes the contributions of a CPA to the business success of his employer and the individual’s contribution to the profession. Champagne is a Senior Vice President and Southeast Business Unit Leader for Confie Insurance Group Holdings where he is responsible for the overall sales and customer service management of the company’s retail auto insurance agencies in Louisiana, Alabama, and South Carolina. He also is very involved in the Baton Rouge community, volunteering his time in support of youth, education, highway safety, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, economic development, and cancer screening and treatment programs.

Robert L. Perez, CPA, received LCPA's Outstanding Discussion Leader Award. The award is presented annually to a Louisiana discussion leader based on number of hours taught, evaluations of participants, and overall quality of courses. A highly regarded speaker in the area of taxation, this year’s award marks Perez's third Outstanding Discussion Leader Award in his career. He is the sole member of the New Orleans CPA firm Robert L. Perez, LLC.

Stephen G. Romig, CPA, Advisory Director for LaPorte CPAs & Business Advisors in New Orleans, received LCPA’s Distinguished Public Service Award. The award is the highest honor for public service leadership, impact, involvement and innovation of a Louisiana CPA. Romig currently volunteers as a services assistant with the Harry Thompson Center — aiding New Orleans’ homeless, and also serves as Chairman of the Greater New Orleans Causeway Commission. From helping individual addicts refocus their lives at Bridge House/Grace House, to guiding economic development with JEDCO, Romig contributes to the greater good of the community on many levels. He will now be nominated for the American Institute of CPAs’ National Public Service Award.

Laura DeLaune Wiley, PhD, CPA, received the Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education Award, presented annually to individuals who distinguish themselves as outstanding full-time accounting educators, participate in scholarly research, and contribute to professional organizations. A resident of Prairieville, Wiley is Assistant Department Chair at LSU in Baton Rouge where she covers a broad cross-section of courses for the department at the undergraduate and graduate level. She advises students not only on their LSU accounting curriculum, but also on their progress in meeting the requirements to sit for the CPA exam. Wiley also serves as chair of LCPA’s Accounting Education Issues Committee.
