Society of Louisiana CPAs Honors Women to Watch

The Society of Louisiana CPAs (LCPA) recently presented Lafayette CPAs, Ellen Cook and Misty Geer, with the 2015 Women to Watch Award. Given in partnership with the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and the AICPA’s Women’s Initiatives Executive Committee, this year's recipients were honored at LCPA's 2015 Women's Leadership Conference on January 9 in Baton Rouge.

The Women to Watch Awards were created by the AICPA to recognize women for their outstanding contributions to the CPA profession, to their workplaces and communities, and to the development of women as leaders. Awards are given in two categories: Established Leaders and Emerging Leaders.

Ellen D. Cook, MS, CPA, CGMA was selected as LCPA's Woman to Watch – Established Leader. Ms. Cook is in her 38th year at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and has taught and mentored thousands of CPAs practicing in Lafayette, Louisiana. In her current position as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, Academic Resources, she works directly with the Provost, concentrating on Academic Resources including budgeting, state funding issues, program cost analysis, external reporting, and assessment, among other duties. A member of the University Council, she is considered a member of the Leadership Team of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Ms. Cook is Past President (and 2008 Service Award recipient) of the American Accounting Association’s Gender Issues and Worklife Balance Section. In 2007, she received the Woman of Excellence Award for Public Service from the Lafayette Commission on the Needs of Women. Ms. Cook also served three years as a member of the AICPA Tax Executive Committee.

Misty Geer, CPA, CGMA, MBA, an Accounting Supervisor for Halliburton, was selected as LCPA's Woman to Watch – Emerging Leader. In addition to her outstanding work at Halliburton, she has displayed considerable initiative to drive change not only within her workplace, but in her community as well. She is president and founding member of the Halliburton's local WSE (Women Sharing Excellence) Chapter and Member of the company's Volunteer Council, HalPac and iMPACT. Within the Lafayette community she serves as Board Member – Junior Achievement of Acadiana, Co-Chair of Foyer Committee – Krewe of Xanadu, and Provisional Member – Junior League of Lafayette. Mrs. Geer also is an AICPA Legacy Scholars’ Coach and a graduate of AICPA’s Leadership Academy (2013). She is very involved at the state level, serving on LCPA's Business & Industry, Career Awareness, Financial Literacy, and Membership committees.

LCPA ( was organized in 1911 and is a non-profit, professional association representing over 7,000 members in public practice, industry, government, and education. It is the premier organization of current and future accountants in the state.
