Today's Cyber World: Security Considerations for NFPs

Insufficient resources, inadequate budgeting and a lack of understanding of current cyber threats may leave some not-for-profit organizations vulnerable to breaches, ransomware and other areas of risk. In addition, the difference between an organization’s IT needs and information security needs may not be well understood or properly supported. In this session, we’ll discuss current cybersecurity issues, with an emphasis on how not-for-profits can improve in the area of information security.

Learning objectives include:

  • Identifying the most critical cyber risks today and control considerations
  • Discuss various technologies such as WiFi systems, cloud computing and the Internet of Things
  • Review planning measures such as incident response planning and cyber risk insurance

Form 990 Update and the Current IRS Priority Plan for Exempt Organizations

Form 990 continues to evolve. Congress is looking at requiring e-Filing for all Form 990-series returns. In addition, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act has resulted in numerous questions – and very few answers to date – with respect to several of the provisions included that affect exempt organizations. Beyond that, we've had changes to priority guidance, several verbal clarifications of issues by IRS staff, and a few new NFP rulings in 2018. In this session we'll unpack the new rules, survey interpretations and regulations so far, give an update on what we are hearing, and list ways organizations should plan for the future.
