Overview

Small businesses across the US have suffered widespread economic disruption due to the COVID-10 pandemic. Although some businesses have recovered from the initial decline, others continue to fight for survival by finding new ways of serving customers while complying with state and local mandates. This workshop gives you a well-rounded update on the issues impacting small businesses to get them on course to come back stronger with their most trusted advisor at the helm.

The legislature passed significant state tax reform in the sales tax, income tax, and franchise tax areas in the 2021 fiscal session. This presentation will cover those items as well as all tax legislation that was approved in the 2021 session. This session will cover a market update surrounding blockchain and the cryptoasset ecosystem. Specific topics will include an update around potential regulation in the United States, IRS enforcement actions, and the implications for the accounting profession. Dr. Smith will also cover a review of decentralized cryptocurrencies (such as bitcoin), stablecoins, as well an explanation and discussion of central bank digital currencies, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and decentralized finance (DeFI). Following a review around cryptoassets, the implications of these newer instruments from an accounting perspective, including internal controls/treasury operations/and the effect of crypto on the financial reporting process.

Robert Angelico

Bob Angelico is a Shareholder with Liskow & Lewis in New Orleans. He is a nationally-known business lawyer with years of experience helping top-tier companies with sophisticated state and local tax issues throughout Louisiana. As the head of the firm’s tax practice group, Bob works to minimize the taxes of his clients, which include manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, non-profits, construction businesses and other entities of all types and sizes.

Clients frequently rely on Bob to represent them in state and local tax audits and administrative appeals as alternatives to the court system. Bob works extensively with the Louisiana Department of Revenue, Louisiana Tax Commission, Louisiana Board of Tax Appeals and local taxing authorities around the state. John Finn III

John “Jack” Finn III, is SVP, Senior Credit Officer, at Gulf Coast Bank and Trust Company where he is responsible for all credit and loan operations. With almost 39 years of experience in the banking industry, Jack is knowledgeable of all facets of credit administration and asset quality operations, as well as direct lending experience as a commercial real estate lender and small business banking lender. Jack has a degree in Accounting and previously practiced as a CPA.

Alexandra Hains

Alexandra Cobb Hains is an associate in the Labor and Employment section of Breazeale, Sachse & Wilson, L.L.P. Prior to going into private practice, Ms. Hains served as judicial law clerk to the Honorable Madeleine Landrieu in the Louisiana Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal. Ms. Hains graduated cum laude from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 2013. She received her undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University in 2009.

Mandi Mitchell

Mandi Mitchell, CEcD, serves as LED’s assistant secretary, managing initiatives and programs related to legislative and congressional relations, community competitiveness, small business services and state economic competitiveness. Prior to her appointment as assistant secretary in June 2015, Mitchell served as the director of governmental affairs and federal programs, which involved the expanded responsibilities of congressional affairs and LED efforts related to ports, transportation and coastal restoration. In 2012, Mandi joined LED as director of governmental affairs with a focus on working with legislative leaders and local government officials on LED priorities and issues.
