Overview

We’ve partnered with the Alabama and Oklahoma CPA societies to feature our best speakers and today’s most relevant topics. The conference offers 4 hours of CPE each day, leaving the rest of the time to enjoy all The Lodge has to offer. NOTE: The 2021 Annual Meeting is scheduled  for Sunday, July 18, after the first SEC session, and will be followed immediately by a reception. To ensure a quorum, all SEC attendees who are LCPA members are asked to attend the meeting, which includes the election of officers and recognition of our annual awards recipients. It's a great time to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.

Michael Brand

Known as a nationally acclaimed, accounting industry expert and speaker, Michael (Mike) has been involved in all aspects of public accounting, with an emphasis in providing accounting, auditing and review services to clients in the for-profit, nonprofits and governmental sectors.

In addition to teaching, Mike regularly speaks at conferences nationwide and in various other countries. He conducts peer reviews across the United States and was formerly on the Peer Review Board, Joint Trial Board, and Quality Control Standards Task Force of the AICPA. He is the current co-chair of the Engage Conference (the AICPA’s largest conference held over multiple days with thousands of attendees).

Taught by one of Alabama’s highest-rated speakers, this session will cover some of the recent guidance in the accounting, auditing, review, compilation, and preparation engagement arenas.

The reception area (bar, heavy hors d’oeuvres) will open at 4:45 pm following the A&A Update. LCPA’s Annual Meeting begins at 5:00 pm and is expected to last no more than 30 minutes. All SEC attendees who are LCPA members are expected to attend the meeting. The reception is included in your registration fee; guests are invited to attend for $25/adult and $10/kids under 10.

Kurt is partner in charge of accounting and auditing services with Oestriecher & Company, CPAs, in Alexandria, and is also involved in litigation support and small business consulting engagements.

Kurt is a 3-time recipient of LCPA’s Outstanding Discussion Leader Award and has been named an Outstanding Discussion Leader for the AICPA 10 times. Kurt has served on the Accounting and Review Services Committee, AICPA Council, and has authored several courses for the AICPA and LCPA.

The past year has been challenging for everyone, and the CPA profession has had a unique opportunity to assist our clients and companies navigate various federal and state programs. This session will focus on the most current issues related to COVID relief, as well as discuss the impact on existing accounting, financial reporting, and ethics standards for CPAs.

Stephen Morgan is an investment director at Hancock Whitney Bank, where he is facilitates a team of investment professionals focused on delivering superior investment strategies and client outcomes.

Stephen has been in the investment industry for over 20 years, joining Hancock Whitney as part of the acquisition of Capital One Asset Management, LLC. Prior to joining Capital One, Stephen worked at Morgan Stanley, efolio.com, Hibernia Bank and Waterhouse Securities.

Stephen has a Bachelor of Mathematics from Carleton College and a Master of Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin.

The pandemic and responses to it have created economic disruptions for more than a year. We’ll survey the current economic landscape and look for implications about the outlook moving forward.

Tracey Golden

Tracey Golden CPA, CGMA, is the Chair of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and Chair of the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants.

Golden has held a number of volunteer leadership positions at the AICPA, previously serving as a member of the Board of Directors and governing Council, as well as Chair of both the Audit and Finance committee and Peer Review Board. In addition, she has served as the Board Liaison to the AICPA Foundation Board of Trustees and a member of the Relations with the Bar and National Peer Review committees.

Prior to recently retiring as an audit partner with Deloitte, Golden had responsibility for facilitating and coordinating reputation and risk related initiatives and matters and collaborating with member firm leadership to proactively identify emerging risk matters and monitor and facilitate managing existing risks in the Americas region.

Golden is an active speaker, presenting at many AICPA and state CPA society conferences on topics including leadership in accounting firms, growing the CPA pipeline and trends in the profession.

She is a member of both the Connecticut and Virginia State CPA Societies. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and several of its committees. She also serves on the board of the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County.

Golden has been recognized for her experience and leadership in the accounting profession. She was named as one of the Most Powerful Women in Accounting by the AICPA and CPA Practice Advisor, and was awarded the AICPA Sustained Contribution Award, recognizing her years of volunteer service on AICPA committees.

Golden received her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Georgetown University.

Tracey has long been a champion of change and moving the profession forward. She’ll discuss many of the issues that impact the profession the most, including the CPA Evolution initiative and the move to make technology a bigger part of the CPA’s professional profile.

Paul Perry

Paul Perry has been with the Firm since 2004 and is a Member and the practice leader of the Security, Risk and Controls Group. Paul and his team focus on cybersecurity, information technology related projects, risk assessments, internal controls, internal audit and control-related projects, including System and Organization Control engagements.

Paul is also the leader of the Firm’s Data Analysis Group, a team of individuals within the Firm who provide data analysis solutions to both internal and external clients. For more than 11 years, he specialized in auditing and assurance services. Paul has extensive experience serving clients in the nonprofit, governmental, financial, insurance and healthcare facilities/hospital industries during this time. Paul has earned the Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP) certification. This credential is awarded to CPAs who possess both information technology and business expertise.

Paul is a thought leader, published columnist and regular speaker on topics such as cybersecurity, data analysis, internal controls and information technology. During the year, Paul performs 20+ external presentations on a wide variety of technology and control related topics to groups including corporate clients, ASCPA, HFMA, IIA and ISACA.

As businesses continue to rely on technology for day-to-day operations and look to the future for what is to come, the CPA profession needs to continue to be the advisor clients and colleagues turn to for guidance. This session will explore how technology has changed over the years and how a basic understanding of current and future technology will serve to strengthen the profession and its mark on society and business.

Jennifer Couvillon

Dr. Jennifer S. Couvillon is the president of Chamberlain University’s New
Orleans campus. Dr. Couvillon brings more than 25 years of experience in
clinical nursing and education to her role and is appointed to the Louisiana
State Board of Nursing.
Prior to joining Chamberlain, Dr. Couvillon served as assistant vice president
of system nursing professional development at Ochsner Health System and
was an assistant professor of clinical nursing at Louisiana State University
School of Nursing. She is a critical care nurse and started her career in the
cardiac intensive care unit at Georgetown University Hospital.
Dr. Couvillon made a global impact as she recruited nursing students for
study abroad programs in England and Ireland. Her perspective on universal
healthcare was born when she cared for patients at Guy’s and St. Thomas’
Hospital in London, England. Dr. Couvillon was recognized for her international
service through the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society Nurse
Chiron mentor program. In 2018 and 2016, Dr. Couvillon was named a New
Orleans City Business Healthcare Hero; in 2012, a City Business Women of
the Year; and in 2003, a New Orleans Great 100 Nurse.
Dr. Couvillon has served as president of Sigma Theta Tau International,
Epsilon Nu Chapter, and as president of the American Nurses Association
New Orleans District Nursing Association. She is a board member of the
Association for Nursing Professional Development and Louisiana Chapter for
National League for Nursing (NLN). She is an NLN ambassador and School of
Nursing evaluator for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Dr. Couvillon earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in nursing education from
Duquesne University, a Master of Science in Nursing degree with a family
nurse practitioner specialty from Georgetown University and a Bachelor of
Science in Nursing degree from Georgetown University. She is board certified
by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (RN-BC) and is an NLN Certified
Nurse Educator (CNE).

Practicing labor and employment law and representing management for 35 years, Mr. Henderson has represented employers in over 25 states in all aspects of labor and employment law. He has handled discrimination jury trials in California, Iowa, Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi. He has successfully defended strikes and labor disputes and negotiated collective bargaining agreements in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Nevada, Oklahoma, Indiana, Illinois, Alabama, California, and New York. He has been recognized by his peers as being among the best in his field and was awarded an A.V. rating by Martindale Hubbell in 2003.

This session will cover key issues about what the new administration may have in store for your operation, such as minimum wage increases, COVID-19 testing, greater union organizing, making vaccinations mandatory, what the EEOC has said about possible exceptions to mandating vaccinations, whether illness from taking the vaccines are covered by worker’s compensation, whether time spent getting the vaccination will be “compensable time,” and independent contractor status.
