Uniform Tax Code Measure Passes Louisiana House

The Uniform Sales Tax Code bill (SB 551) passed the House of Representatives on Monday, May 19, 2003.

The Society of Louisiana CPAs has put a lot of time and effort into the Uniform Sales Tax Code bill. This bill provides for local sales tax codes to be uniform across Louisiana and would enable businesses to calculate and pay those taxes electronically. The measure by Sen. Bill Jones, D-Ruston, goes back to the Senate for approval of minor amendments, then to the Gov. Foster for signature.

The measure also creates a Web site for businesses to enter sales figures and have their taxes automatically calculated. The businesses could automatically transfer their payments in one lump sum to be divided, instead of sending individual checks to each local agency where taxes were owed. The Society will have a representative on an advisory committee that will be involved in the design and implementation of the electronic payment system.
